This Lamp explores landscape and memory in the small village of Petacciato, in the Molise region of Italy, where rural buildings have become abandoned remnants scattered across the territory. Yet these ruins, through their enduring presence rooted in the ground and in the arrangement of their stones, reveal the secret of their longevity. Combined with the use of local materials bound solely with lime and with the ancient knowledge of traditional building techniques, they embody the history of this place.

Originally, these were utilitarian structures, created without any aesthetic intention: a Saracen watchtower, a small rural church, and a shelter for livestock. Functional architectures born out of necessity for farming communities who lived between the hills and the Adriatic Sea.

Through a visual investigation that combines photographic documentation and artistic intervention, the images of these ruins are reworked by means of hand-executed embossing, introducing a new three-dimensional space in which to “re-read” the value of these stones.Pausing to reflect upon and deepen our understanding of their history makes it possible to connect what is destined to disappear with what can be regenerated today, offering an opportunity to rethink the future.

Questa Lampada indaga il paesaggio e la memoria nel piccolo borgo di Petacciato, in Molise, dove costruzioni rurali sono divenuti rifiuti in stato di abbandono dispersi sul territorio. Tuttavia, questi ruderi rivelano, nella loro tenace permanenza radicata al suolo e nella disposizione delle pietre, il segreto della loro longevità che, unito all’uso di materiali autoctoni legati a sola calce e ai saperi antichi di tecniche costruttive locali, definiscono la storia di questo luogo. In origine erano architetture d’uso, prive di intenzione estetica: una torre di avvistamento saracena, una chiesetta rurale, un rifugio per il bestiame. Strutture funzionali, nate per necessità di popolazioni contadine vissute tra le collina e il mare Adriatico. Attraverso una ricerca visiva che combina documentazione fotografica e intervento artistico, le immagini delle rovine vengono rielaborate tramite incisione manuale a sbalzo, introducendo un nuovo spazio tridimensionale in cui “rileggere” il valore di queste pietre. Soffermarsi, riflettere e approfondire la storia del loro vissuto consente di mettere in relazione ciò che è destinato a scomparire con ciò che può essere oggi rigenerato, offrendo uno spunto per ripensare il futuro.
