Underdrawing is a visual and conceptual interplay between two layers: photography and drawing.
The idea arose from the close observation, under raking light, of a fresco, in which the marks incised into the lime layer, known as preparatory marks, define the contours of the volumes corresponding to the visible painted layer.

During this observation, however, I noticed certain discrepancies, commonly referred to as “artist’s pentimenti”, that is, reconsiderations or revisions of the original design choices made by the artist in the course of executing the work.

Underdrawing highlights these pentimenti as a metaphor: through a gold-colored paper silhouette placed beneath the print, I bring to light the possible deviations from predetermined paths, revealing those inconsistencies, both necessary and productive, that contribute to shaping our real and ideal selves.

Underdrawing è un gioco visivo e concettuale tra due strati: la fotografia e il disegno.
L’idea nasce dall’osservazione ravvicinata, con luce radente, di un affresco, in cui i segni incisi nello strato di calce, detti preparatori, definiscono i contorni dei volumi corrispondenti allo strato pittorico visibile.

Durante questa osservazione mi è capitato però di notare alcune disparità, chiamate in gergo “pentimenti dell’artista”, ossia ripensamenti sulle scelte progettuali originarie compiuti dall’autore nel corso dell’esecuzione dell’opera.

Underdrawing evidenzia questi pentimenti in forma di metafora: attraverso una sagoma di carta color oro, posta sotto la stampa, metto in luce le possibili deviazioni dai percorsi definiti, rendendo visibili quelle incongruenze, necessarie e fertili, che contribuiscono a costruire il nostro Sé reale e il nostro Sé ideale.
