I’m sharing the interview I gave during the residency, which was published in the local newspaper of Wenling:

"All summer long, I fantasized about what my journey to China would be like, imagining scenarios and emotions. However, as soon as I arrived, reality far exceeded all my expectations. I was deeply moved by what I found, something I could never have anticipated.

My artistic practice has always been rooted in creating works that revolve around the preservation of cultural heritage. I thought that addressing this theme in a context so different from my own, where innovation and transformation seem to move at a dizzying pace, might feel almost irrelevant. But I soon realized that this was not the case at all. Despite the unstoppable change, in the city of Wenling, where rural villages are being emptied to make room for skyscrapers rising like forests of concrete, I rediscovered a sense of belonging and tradition that still endures. The social fabric retains an ancient flavor, something that struck me deeply.

I came to understand that the memory we must preserve does not lie solely in material objects, in houses, land, or personal possessions. What truly needs to be safeguarded is the shared value of brotherhood, of community spirit, and here, I found a vivid testament to that. It is both surprising and moving, especially for someone like me who comes from the other side of the world, to witness the determination of these people to keep their collective memory alive despite the relentless tide of change.

Throughout my career as an art restorer, I’ve witnessed the abandonment of places and buildings, turning into rubble and silent voids. Now, here in Wenling, seeing the same phenomenon on such a large scale, where there were once homes and lives, and now only spaces waiting to be filled with concrete, makes me reflect on how this journey, this artistic path, and this city can be reinterpreted as metaphors for rebirth.

I want to delve deeply into these themes. In the artistic project I will develop for the 2025 exhibition in China, my intention is to recreate this atmosphere, this intertwining of present and future, and to find points of connection and similarity with my own homeland. I will dedicate myself fully to creating a work that represents this union between two worlds so far apart, in the hope of capturing and conveying the profound value of memory and rebirth."

"Per tutta l'estate ho fantasticato su come sarebbe stato il mio viaggio in Cina, immaginando scenari e sensazioni. Tuttavia, non appena sono arrivata qui, la realtà ha superato di gran lunga ogni mia aspettativa. Sono stata profondamente colpita da ciò che ho trovato, qualcosa che non avrei mai potuto prevedere.
La mia pratica artistica è sempre stata legata alla creazione di opere d'arte che ruotano intorno alla conservazione del patrimonio culturale. Pensavo che affrontare questo tema in una realtà così diversa dalla mia, dove innovazione e trasformazione sembrano correre a ritmi vertiginosi, potesse apparire quasi superfluo. Invece, mi sono resa conto che non è affatto così. Nonostante il cambiamento inarrestabile, nella città di Wenling dove i villaggi rurali vengono svuotati per far spazio a grattacieli che si ergono come foreste di cemento, ho riscoperto un senso di appartenenza e di tradizione che ancora resiste. La comunità sociale mantiene un sapore antico, qualcosa che mi ha profondamente colpito.
Ho compreso che la memoria da preservare non risiede solo negli oggetti materiali, nelle case, nei terreni o negli averi personali. Ciò che va custodito è il valore comune della fratellanza, del senso di comunità, ed è proprio qui che ho trovato una vivida testimonianza di questo. È sorprendente ed emozionante, soprattutto per me che vengo dall'altra parte del mondo, percepire la volontà di queste persone di mantenere viva la memoria collettiva, nonostante il cambiamento incessante.
Per tutta la mia professione da restauratrice di opere d'arte ho assistito all' abbandono  di luoghi e di edifici trasformati in macerie e vuoti silenziosi. Ora, qui a Wenling, vedere lo stesso fenomeno in forma abnorme, dove c'erano case e vite oggi solo spazi in attesa di essere riempiti di cemento,  mi fa riflettere su come questo viaggio e questo percorso artistico e questa città, possano darmi l'opportunità per essere ri-interpretati come metafore di rinascita.
Voglio dunque esplorare a fondo queste tematiche. Nel progetto artistico che svilupperò per l'esposizione del 2025 in Cina, sarà mia intenzione ricreare questa atmosfera, questo intreccio tra il presente e il futuro e trovare i punti di contatto e le similitudini con la mia terra. Mi impegnerò a fondo per realizzare un'opera che rappresenti questo connubio tra due mondi così distanti, con la speranza di catturare e trasmettere il valore profondo della memoria e della rinascita".

WORKSHOP – From Abandonment to Rebirth: The Creative Process

I had the great pleasure of presenting a workshop entitled “From Abandonment to Rebirth”, held at the Wenling Institute of Painting and Calligraphy in China. The event was introduced by Mr. Ye Wenlong, a renowned photographer, winner of the China Photography Award, and president of the Wenling Photography Association.
The hall was filled with students, photography enthusiasts, and members of the association, all eager to explore new artistic perspectives.

During the workshop, I had the opportunity to share my artistic practice, illustrating it through a series of projected images. It was an engaging experience, not only visually, but also tactilely, as I presented photographs printed and engraved using the embossing technique, allowing attendees to literally "feel" the artworks and explore their materiality.

On this special occasion, I had the honor of presenting two of my works, which were warmly received by both Mrs. Yiwei Lu, owner of Yiwei Gallery and supporter of the artist residency, and by President Ye Wenlong.
Their enthusiasm and heartfelt appreciation made this experience all the more meaningful for me.

WORKSHOP  - Dall' abbandono alla rinascita: Il processo creativo 

Ho avuto il grande piacere di presentare un workshop intitolato "Dall'abbandono alla rinascita", organizzato presso l'Istituto di pittura e scrittura di Wenling, in Cina. L'evento è stato presentato da Mr. Ye Wenlong rinomato fotografo vincitore del China Photography Award e presidente dell'Associazione di fotografia di Wenling. La sala era gremita di studenti e appassionati di fotografia, membri dell'associazione, desiderosi di conoscere nuove prospettive artistiche.

Durante il workshop, ho avuto l'opportunità di condividere la mia pratica artistica, illustrandola attraverso una serie di immagini proiettate. È stata un'esperienza coinvolgente, non solo visivamente, ma anche tattile, poiché ho mostrato fotografie stampate e incise con la tecnica della goffratura, permettendo ai presenti di "toccare" con mano le opere, esplorando la loro dimensione materica.

In questa occasione speciale, ho avuto l'onore di consegnare due delle mie opere, che sono state molto apprezzate sia da Mrs. Yiwei Lu, titolare della Yiwei  Gallery  e sostenitrice della residenza artistica, sia dal presidente Ye Wenlong.

Il loro entusiasmo e il caloroso apprezzamento hanno reso questa esperienza ancora più significativa per me.

During my residency in China, I was able to show my photographer friends from the Wenling photography association the exhibition of my finalist works for the TERNA award in AR (Augmented Reality) version. The virtual event was possible thanks to the support of the PDE 2024 App downloadable from Google play and App Store and also discover all the exclusive content.

Durante la residenza in Cina ho potuto far apprezzare agli amici fotografi dell'associazione di fotografia di Wenling,  l'esposizione delle mie opere finaliste del premio TERNA in versione AR  (Realtà Aumentata).
